Cono Sur wines are a triple threat: They are among the best bargains in the liquor store, and they are also organic and sustainable farmed. This spicy merlot is intense, with plum and cherry flavours.

A dazzling value, showing vibrancy, depth and complexity well beyond its price. The secret? Viognier was grafted onto chenin blanc vines that were planted in 1957; the old vines add intensity to the flavours. Expect lifted aromas of spearmint, starfruit and pepper. Light to mid-weight and zesty, with some typical Viognier bitterness. The 2009 should be just as good.

This has been a general list staple for several years, offering decent pinot character at a price most producers can’t touch. The large old pinot vineyards at Cono Sur are so specialized that a new pinot-only winery was built this year. This has a generous cran-rhubarb flavours and a touch of perfume and oak toast. It’s medium-bodied, sweetish and rounded. Now to 2012.

Concentrated flavours of black and red fruits are nicely balanced with soft tannins and a hint of oak. The wine aged for six month in 80 percent oak barrels and 20 percent stainless-steel tanks. All the grapes were hand harvested ant are 100% certified organic. The Cabernet Sauvignon definitely adds some richness and body to the wine, but the Carmenere flavours are still prominent.

From Valle de Colchagua (Colchagua Valley), this wine has amazing spicy, nectarine, honey, grapefruit and orange aromas. The palate is lively with spicy, floral, ginger, orange, juicy melon flavours. Elegant and fun with lots of fruit. Consistently fine and the 2008 is one of the best yet.

This is a typical Oregon Pinot Noir with hints of cherry, blackberry, red dirt and fragrant earth laced with violets. It’s pure, almost insanely clean. Perfect, stunning, addictive. Captures all that makes Pinot famous, but polishes it up into a structured masterpiece with crisp leather and wood layers. I do not know how one can make a better Pinot outside of Burgundy. This may be one of the finest Pinots you will ever drink. Astounding, one of my most favorite wines, ever. 99 points.

The Cono Sur brand has made impressions around the globe and when you taste this wine, you will know why. Light purplish red in color with sweet cherry, berry aromas and spicy, earthy notes. Similar juicy flavours touched up with earthy notes and mild tannins and medium acid estructure. Pleasant and pleasing fresh fruit finish.

There is a peculiar mixture of varieties in this rich and hearty sparkling wine, but also has an excellent concentration in mouth, all framed by citric notes.

This Chardonnay has a generous nose of ripe pineapples and floral notes, in a juicy and super acid body. A bright example of the variety in Chile.

“I lived in Chile between 1963 and 1965 and currently I live in Orlando, Florida. I’m enjoying a glass of “Cono Sur” Cabernet Sauvignon, I love it!!! Would love to know where these lovely grapes were grown… Maybe I was there! Thanks very much!!!”

“Last summer I was on holiday in France. In a nice village I saw a great looking old bicycle leaning against a wall. It was almost fully covered with leafs and bush, and I took a few pictures of it. At home I opened up a bottle of your Merlot. On the label I saw a bike looking just like the one on my photo, so I decided to mail you. The wine was great! It is definitely on my list of favourites.”
